How to Keep Your Fresh Flowers Looking Beautiful During Hot Weather

When the weather turns warm, there’s nothing nicer than filling your home with fresh flowers. Whether you’ve received a stunning bouquet as a gift, treated yourself to beautiful seasonal blooms, or ordered flowers for a special occasion, a little extra care can make all the difference during the summer months.

At Cadie’s Closet Flowers, we want every bouquet to last as long as possible. High temperatures can shorten the life of fresh flowers, but by following a few simple steps, you can enjoy your blooms for days longer.

Start with a Clean Vase

One of the most important things you can do is begin with a thoroughly cleaned vase. Bacteria is one of the biggest reasons flowers deteriorate quickly, especially during warm weather.

Wash your vase with warm soapy water and rinse it well before filling it with fresh, cool water. Even if the vase looks clean, invisible bacteria can still be present.

Cut the Stems Properly

Before placing your flowers in water, trim approximately 1-2cm from the bottom of each stem using sharp scissors or secateurs.

Always cut the stems at a 45-degree angle. This creates a larger surface area for water absorption and prevents the stems from sitting flat against the bottom of the vase.

If your bouquet lasts several days, trim the stems again every two or three days to keep water flowing freely.

Change the Water Regularly

During hot weather, bacteria multiplies much faster. Fresh water is essential if you want your flowers to stay vibrant.

Replace the vase water every two days, or even daily during particularly hot spells.

Each time you change the water:

  • Wash the vase quickly.
  • Refill with fresh, cool water.
  • Add fresh flower food if available.
  • Remove any leaves sitting below the waterline.

This simple routine can significantly extend the life of your bouquet.

Keep Flowers Out of Direct Sunlight

Although flowers grow outdoors, cut flowers actually last much longer in cooler conditions.

Avoid placing your arrangement:

  • On sunny windowsills.
  • Next to radiators.
  • Near fireplaces.
  • Close to televisions or electronic equipment that produces heat.

Instead, display them in a bright room away from direct sunlight. Hall tables, dining tables away from windows, and shaded kitchen worktops are all ideal locations.

Keep Flowers Away from Fruit

Many people don’t realise that ripening fruit releases a natural gas called ethylene.

Ethylene speeds up the ageing process in flowers, causing petals to wilt much sooner than expected.

Try not to place bouquets beside fruit bowls, especially bananas, apples, pears or avocados.

Use the Flower Food Provided

Every bouquet from Cadie’s Closet Flowers includes flower food whenever possible, and it really does make a difference.

Flower food contains:

  • Nutrients to feed the flowers.
  • Ingredients that reduce bacteria.
  • Compounds that help the flowers absorb water.

If you’ve misplaced the sachet, simply keeping the water clean is far better than adding household

Remove Wilted Blooms

As individual flowers begin to fade, remove them from the arrangement.

This helps:

  • Improve the appearance of the bouquet.
  • Prevent bacteria spreading.
  • Allow the healthier flowers to continue thriving.

Many mixed bouquets naturally bloom at different times, so removing older flowers allows newer blooms to take centre stage.

Special Care for Lilies

Lilies are one of the longest-lasting flowers when cared for properly.

Once the flowers open:

  • Carefully remove the pollen-bearing anthers.
  • This prevents pollen staining clothing and furniture.
  • It also helps extend the life of each bloom.

Lilies often continue opening over several days, giving your bouquet an ever-changing display.

Keep Flowers Cool Overnight

If your home becomes particularly warm during the evening, moving your bouquet into a cooler room overnight can help extend its life.

Conservatories and rooms that become very hot during the day should generally be avoided during heatwaves.

Watch Your Water Levels

Large thirsty flowers such as hydrangeas, sunflowers and lilies drink surprising amounts of water.

Check the vase daily and top it up whenever necessary. Never allow stems to sit in an empty vase, even for a short period.

Enjoy Your Flowers for Longer

Fresh flowers naturally have a limited lifespan, but with a little care, you can often enjoy them for a week or even longer.

At Cadie’s Closet Flowers, every bouquet is carefully prepared using fresh, quality blooms, and we always want our customers to get the very best from every arrangement. By keeping your flowers cool, changing the water regularly, trimming the stems and displaying them away from direct sunlight, you’ll enjoy brighter, healthier flowers for much longer—even during the hottest summer days.

Whether you’re celebrating a birthday, sending your love, marking a special occasion or simply brightening someone’s day, a little extra care will help your beautiful bouquet continue to bring smiles for days to come.
